Payday and installment loans in Wisconsin

Fresh Hope Financial is a loan-request service, not a lender. Current Wisconsin products and providers are unconfirmed. Wisconsin distinguishes a defined payday loan from longer loan-company credit; that difference affects which limits and repayment protections apply to the agreement you are considering.

Payday loans and longer installment credit

Wisconsin DFI defines the regulated payday category by a term of 90 days or less and a held-check or deferred electronic-payment arrangement. A high interest rate alone does not make an agreement a payday loan.

DFI separately explains that many loan companies offer longer installment credit under a loan-company license. Do not assume that such an agreement has the payday statute's borrowing limit, renewal restriction or repayment-plan requirement. Read the term, payment authorization and license category before relying on a rule from a payday comparison page.

Income limits and total loan charges

For covered payday lending, the boundary is the lower of $1,500 or 35% of gross monthly income. DFI's eligibility guidance says outstanding aggregate liability is determined using principal, interest and other charges. The headline limit is therefore not a promise of that much cash in hand.

Illustration only, not a Fresh Hope offer: 35% of $2,000 gross monthly income is $700. A hypothetical $600 principal plus $120 of charges totals $720, already above that figure. The example demonstrates why fees cannot simply be ignored when assessing the limit.

Interest rates and repayment costs

DFI states that Wisconsin's payday statute does not set a maximum interest rate during the original term. It also distinguishes the interest rules for the repayment stage after maturity. Do not use a national payday APR or the post-maturity figure as the price of a new loan.

Compare actual APR, finance charge, total payments and due dates across written quotes. A longer installment schedule can reduce each payment while leaving a large total. If essentials would require another advance after the debit, compare a bill arrangement or a small loan from your existing financial institution first.

Payday loan repayment plans

The Wisconsin payday guide describes a four-installment plan for an eligible borrower unable to repay at maturity, with installments aligned to pay dates and post-maturity interest of 2.75% per month. The entitlement is limited to one offer within a 12-month period.

Ask whether your specific agreement meets the payday definition and whether an earlier plan offer affects eligibility. Obtain the amount and dates in writing. A plan under the payday statute should not be promised for a longer loan-company product just because it is collected through an account debit.

Cancellation and early repayment

For a covered payday loan, the DFI guide describes no-fee rescission by returning proceeds before the close of the next business day, or before 5 p.m. that day if the lender is open 24 hours. It also describes a partial finance-charge refund for early repayment.

Check the instructions immediately and keep a dated receipt. After that short window, obtain a written payoff rather than assuming the same cancellation result continues indefinitely. Tell the lender and bank promptly about any disputed payment authorization; changing an authorization does not by itself determine the balance owed.

Wisconsin lender checks and complaints

Use Wisconsin DFI's licensed-financial-services resources to identify the legal lender and the license type. Its payday-lender page links consumer information and complaint resources. Search by the creditor on the agreement, including any trade name, rather than relying solely on the page's logo.

Save the contract, pre-loan disclosure, payment-plan communications and bank entries if a disagreement develops. Describe whether the issue concerns a defined payday loan or a longer installment product when contacting DFI. Fresh Hope's request process does not establish a lender's Wisconsin authority or a confirmed product offer.

General borrowing checklist

Confirm availability in Wisconsin

Ask the lender whether the specific product is available at your address in Wisconsin. A general loan label or a state-guide page does not establish availability.

Fresh Hope Financial is a loan-request service. Submitting a request does not guarantee an offer, approval or funding.

Compare the complete borrowing cost

Read APR, fees, total repayment and every due date in any actual offer. Do not infer the cost from the name of a product or from a single payment.

Check the repayment arrangement

A payday loan often has one due date, while an installment loan has multiple scheduled payments. Cash advance is a broad label; ask which repayment arrangement the lender means.

Verify the lender’s identity

Identify the lender and check the authorization relevant to the product and your location. State requirements and permitted products can differ; verify the current position before accepting an offer.

Read the form before submitting

Review the consent and privacy information, check what information is requested and ask about credit inquiries and payment collection.

Consider alternatives to borrowing

A payment arrangement, a bank or credit-union option, or trusted personal or community help may be worth exploring. Check the costs and conditions of each option before deciding.

Questions about borrowing in Wisconsin

Is every expensive Wisconsin loan a payday loan?

No. DFI's definition includes a term of 90 days or less and specified held-check or deferred-payment features.

Can I assume a $1,500 cash advance is allowed?

No. The income-based limit may be lower, and charges and other outstanding liability matter to eligibility.

Does 2.75% per month price a new payday loan?

No. That figure concerns post-maturity interest in the specified repayment context, not a general original-term rate ceiling.

Must every installment lender offer the payday payment plan?

No. The payday plan protection depends on the product meeting the statutory definition and the borrower's eligibility.

Can I change my mind the next business day?

The payday guide provides a no-fee return window with specific closing-time rules. Confirm the deadline and accepted return method immediately.

Does this page confirm that a loan is available in Wisconsin?

No. Ask the lender about the exact product and your address. This guide explains questions to check; it does not confirm product availability.

Where do I find the actual costs?

Read the amount, APR, fees, total repayment and payment schedule in the lender’s actual offer before deciding.
